Having lived here for a year and a half across my two Erasmus experiences, I can confirm the food scene is just brilliant and incredibly diverse. Then, after returning for a short summer holiday, I once again tasted those same delightful flavours.

So now, after thorough research, I am thrilled to share my carefully curated list of the 100 Best Spots in Málaga for Food and Drink. Whether it is your first time visiting Málaga or you are a returning traveller wanting to properly taste your way through the city, this guide has something for every single palate. 🗺️ How to Navigate the List.

I have organised this list by category, such as breakfast and brunch, traditional Andalusian, chic rooftops, and restaurants offering unique dining experiences. It has been quite challenging to categorise every single spot. For instance, some ethnic restaurants offer vegan menus, whilst certain venues are equally perfect for a brunch or a dinner depending on what you fancy. Similarly, some coffee shops are ideal for a quick afternoon espresso but also serve a whole breakfast.

Some restaurants and venues have multiple locations across the city. In the brackets, I have included either my personal favourite branch or the one with the best reviews. For a few of these spots, I have also made sure to mention my absolute favourite dish!

Whilst researching my old favourites, I rediscovered several brilliant restaurants I had dined in but hadn’t immediately remembered, and by checking maps and other local guides, I uncovered even more fantastic places. Sadly, I also noticed that a few spots I used to love have now permanently closed. However, here we are with this ultimate guide: the 100 best spots in Málaga for food and drink.

🥯 Breakfast and Brunch.

1. Mala Leche (C. Castillo de Sohail, 1, Distrito Centro, 29005 Málaga, Spain)

11. Casa Lola (Pl. de Uncibay, 8, Distrito Centro, 29008 Málaga, Spain)

Whichever you visit, tasting the “hamburguesa de presa ibérica” and the “mini kebab de pollo” is an absolute must.

12. Bodega El Pimpi (C. Granada, 62, Distrito Centro, 29015 Málaga, Spain)

A quintessential Málaga experience and another favourite. The magnificent interior is perfectly complemented by a splendid terrace. Do take care not to confuse it with La Sole del Pimpi, which specialises in Japanese fusion sushi rather than traditional Andalusian fare.

17. Pepa y Pepe (C. Luis de Velázquez, 3, Distrito Centro, 29008 Málaga, Spain)

The ideal destination if you are craving traditional fried Andalusian fare. The “croquetas” are a particular standout for both their brilliant flavour and their generous portion sizes.

Holding a prestigious Michelin Star, this exceptional restaurant is located by the port. It offers a refined culinary experience that elevates the best local Andalusian ingredients.

100. 100 montaditos (Various locations across Málaga)

A wildly popular Spanish chain offering an enormous variety of bite-sized sandwiches. It is an absolutely brilliant option for a budget-friendly meal, especially on Wednesdays and Sundays when most of their ‘montaditos’ cost just €1 alongside other fantastic promotions.

🏆 Honorable Mentions.

1. Bakkano (C. Casapalma, 4, Distrito Centro, 29008 Málaga, Spain)

This was the quintessential “Erasmus Bar” for the 2018-2019 generation. The Italian owner actually did his own Erasmus in Málaga. Whilst it is sad to see that this original venue has recently closed, he opened Bakkano 2.0 in 2020, which is doing brilliantly and continues to host fantastic Erasmus events.

2. Monkey’s House (C. Álamos, 2, Distrito Centro, 29012 Málaga, Spain)

An absolute institution in its heyday, renowned for offering hundreds of crazy shots at very cheap prices. Sadly, it has now permanently closed its doors.

3. Picasso Bar Tapas (Pl. de la Merced, 20, Distrito Centro, 29012 Málaga, Spain)

The primary spot to hang out in Plaza de la Merced during my Erasmus days, largely due to a best friend’s absolute obsession with it! Whilst the food might not be highly exceptional, the vibrant atmosphere over Plaza de la Merced and its cheap price made it a perfect spot to hang out.

4. Noviembre The Flavor House (C. Álamos, 18, Distrito Centro, 29008 Málaga, Spain)

A lovely restaurant that used to be a nice choice for healthy and vegetarian options. It is a great shame that it has recently closed down.

5. La Casa Invisible (C. Andrés Pérez, 8, Distrito Centro, 29008 Málaga, Spain)

If you appreciate social and cultural centres, you simply must pop into La Casa Invisible. It is a garden-like space right in the city centre that hosts various events and cultural exchanges. There is a small bar, though I’m not sure if they still sell drinks. Last time I was there, visitors have been allowed to bring their own beer to enjoy in the courtyard.

💡 Travel Tips.

Embracing the Spanish timetable is essential for a smooth culinary experience. Early breakfasts are not really a thing here; most coffee shops, bakeries, and even the local Atarazanas Market typically open between 8 AM and 9 AM. It is also important to note that many restaurant kitchens close during the late afternoon. So if you fancy a mid-afternoon bite, look for venues advertising cocina ininterrumpida (all-day dining) or simply pop into a café. Finally, do not expect to have dinner at 7 PM! Spaniards typically enjoy lunch between 2 PM and 3 PM, whilst dinner rarely starts before 9 PM. If you are hungry earlier, it is the perfect excuse to grab a refreshing drink and a quick tapa to keep you going.

Málaga’s food scene is incredibly popular, particularly at iconic establishments like Bodega El Pimpi and Casa Lola. For these famous spots, as well as chic rooftops, Michelin-starred venues, or highly rated traditional restaurants, booking a table in advance is strongly recommended, especially at weekends. Regarding tipping, leaving a propina is not strictly mandatory in Spain, but it is certainly appreciated for lovely service. Standard practice is to leave a few extra coins or simply round up the bill.

🛏️ Where to Stay in Malaga.

If you are wondering where to base yourself, the best areas are around Plaza de la Constitución, La Goleta, or the trendy Soho district. I highly recommend avoiding Plaza de la Merced and locations with a heavy concentration of nightclubs. Trust me, you will not sleep a wink!
