🌍 Step 1: Choose Your Destination and Travel Time.

First things first: decide when and where you would like to go.

If you have already a place in mind, open a flight search engine like Kiwi or Skyscanner and choose the departure city and destination. Select the “flexible dates” option to have a panoramic view of flight costs for each day of the month.

Then, think about how many days, weeks, or even months you want to travel. If you’re working, you’ll naturally need to consider how many days of annual leave to request. Or, in the case of long weekends, whether you need to ask for additional time off depending on your return flight.

🎲 Travel Hacks.

If you are not sure about your next destination, use the option “Explore Anywhere” on Skyscanner. You’ll get a clear idea of the cheapest prices from your departure city.

💰 Step 2: Define a Budget and Travel Style.

Now that you have decided on the destination and booked your flights, ask yourself what type of trip you want to do. Relaxing or adventurous? Luxury or budget-friendly? Is the place you are travelling to a beach destination, a mountain escape, or an urban getaway?

Thus, based on your destination, preferences, and travel style, set a maximum daily budget. Think about how much you are able to spend per day considering accommodation, transport, food, activities, shopping, and extras. And do not forget to always purchase comprehensive travel insurance and have some savings in case of an emergency, especially nowadays.

🎲 Travel Hacks.

If you are planning a road trip, choosing a comfortable car through a reliable platform is fundamental. In this post, I share with you the Best Car Rental Platforms for Your Next Road Trip.

📅 Step 3: Build Your Itinerary per Each Day covering Specific Areas.

Once you have chosen the best flights according to your needs and travel style, identify the areas of interest in the destination you’re going to.

If you choose a big area such an entire country, start by narrowing it down on a map. Use Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube and travel blogs to get inspiration. Read about the best things to do, hidden gems, and must-do experiences to get ideas for your trip.

Once you’ve got your list, group attractions and activities by area. This helps you walk around easily instead of wasting time on transport.

🕰️ Plan Your Days and Hours.

Now that you know what you want to see, it’s time to plan your days.

Organise your itinerary by neighbourhoods or districts. For instance, if you are travelling to London, you can spend one day around Camden Town, one day in Notting Hill, another day visiting museums. This way, you can explore on foot, enjoy the vibe, and stop to relax without rushing.

Leave one or two days for some day trips to a nearby small town, a natural park, or even another city. Check bus and train connections in advance. And don’t forget that some city passes and travel cards include discounted or free day trips. For example, the New York City Pass includes the ferry to Liberty Island.

Now that you’ve decided what to see each day, organise your schedule hour by hour. Set the time you’ll wake up, your meal times, and when you’ll visit museums or other attractions. Decide how long you want to spend on each activity, plan around any scheduled tours, and take into account train or bus timetables.

🎲 Travel Hacks.

Use Google My Maps to pin everything, see what’s close together, and create different layers. This way, you can also see how far the places you want to visit are and calculate your daily kilometers.

🛏️ Step 4: Choose the Right Accommodation.

Where you sleep and recharge your batteries can make a huge difference.

If you’re travelling solo or on a budget, hostels or guesthouses are perfect as they’re affordable and have a social environment.

However, if you prefer more privacy, opt for a hotel room or even and entire apartment.

In any case, always check location, reviews, and transport connections before booking. Sometimes, a cheaper stay outside the centre can cost more if you spend too much time and money commuting.

🎲 Travel Hacks.

If a city you want to visit is too expensive, try to find an accommodation located about 10-15 minutes on foot from the stations or main bus stops in a nearby town. This way, you’ll save at least a bit of money and time. For instance, if you would like to visit Venice, you could stay in Treviso in hotels or apartments close to the train station.

🍝 Step 5: Eat Smart and Clean.

Food is the soul of every culture. Tasting local dishes connect you with the heart of a place and its people.

Nevertheless, eating out every single day can be inconvenient, expensive, and sometimes tough on your stomach, especially if you’re visiting an exotic country and you’re unfamiliar with strong flavours.

My rule is simple: one meal out every two days. It can be a breakfast in a cozy bakery, a quick lunch at a fast-food place, or a fancy dinner in a mid-range restaurant.

The first thing I do is look up a few traditional dishes. Depending on the culinary heritage of a country, I narrow it to a specific region or even city. You shouldn’t eat Paella in Galicia or Panzerotto in Turin as Spain and Italy have a strong food tradition, and every region or city has its own signature dish.

Once you find the traditional dishes, look on Google Maps and TripAdvisor for restaurants that serve them. Compare prices, locations, and reviews on both platforms to decide where to eat. Ideally, it should be within the area of your daily plan.

Prefer local restaurants where residents eat and skip tourist traps. Usually, touristy restaurants have big multilingual menus with lots of pictures, large signs outside, and waiters calling people in.

🥪 How to Plan your Meals while Travelling.

I personally always choose hostels or hotel with breakfast included. The first thing I do in the morning is eat, have a coffee, and a cigarette. If I can’t find good accommodation with breakfast, I buy snacks at the supermarket to be eaten in m room and grab coffee later.

For lunch and dinner, depending on my daily schedule, I either have a nice meal in a restaurant, take away food from stalls, or something from the supermarket. In fact, many grocery shops sell tasty ready-to-eat options. Sometimes, I even pack food from the hotel breakfast buffet to eat at lunch. Always ask hotel staff if you can take the food!

I honestly prefer eating out for lunch. Prices are usually cheaper, and I don’t have to walk back at night since I’m already at my accommodation. Plus, it feels so much better to go to bed without feeling too full! However, if I can’t finish my meal, I always ask the staff to box up my leftovers to take away for my next meal.

Last but not least, always buy snacks and water in supermarkets to avoid overpriced shops, especially around attractions. Bring a reusable water bottle, so you can refill it and always have fresh water on hand. Especially on long days, you’ll consume more calories and need to stay hydrated.

🎲 Travel Hacks.

If you want to save even more money and control your diet, stay in an apartment or hostel with a shared kitchen. This way, you can cook your own meals and even pack your lunch box.

Take a look at my article Best Websites for Foodie Travellers to find cosy diners, great delivery offers, and ways to save food from going to waste while saving money.

🚅 Step 6: Save Money and Time while Getting Around.

Smart planning means more money and time for more experiences.

Using public transport within a city or a train to reach further destinations is a good, sustainable way to travel. If you’re the kind of person who can sleep anywhere, you can save both time and accommodation costs by choosing night buses, night trains, or even night flights. Nowadays, especially in Asia, there are plenty of night buses and trains with sleeper cabins or beds. They’re not the most comfortable, but at least you can lie down.

You can also save some money if you purchase your tickets directly at the counter or on official national transport websites. However, these websites may not be very clear, and you might risk not finding available seats by booking at the counter.

🎲 Travel Hacks.

You can also book your tickets on third-party websites, where you often find promo codes and discounts. Plus, you have the security of customer support if something goes wrong.

Take a look at my article Best Travel Websites for Booking Trains, Buses and Ferries to find great deals and discounts with my promo codes and referral programmes.

However, some places are difficult to reach by public transport. If you aren’t comfortable hiring a car in a foreign country, you might consider booking a taxi via a reliable app, as I suggest in my post Best Taxi Apps Around the World. Alternatively, you could look into carpooling or car sharing if you don’t mind driving or sitting in a car with people you don’t know in an unfamiliar city.

🪪 Step 7: Documentation.

Last but not least, before every trip, make sure all your travel documents are in order. Check the entry requirements and visa regulations for your destination as they can vary depending on your nationality and the length of your stay. Always verify that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. A little awareness can save you a lot of stress and problems later!

🎲 Travel Hacks.

Keep digital and physical copies of your documents in a safe place.

💡 Final Travel Tips.

Don’t assume your journey will always go smooth and peaceful according to your plans: always travel with a contingency budget for the unexpected.

Also, be careful not to overload your itinerary with too many sights. It is far better to be realistic about how much walking you can handle than to risk delaying your plans or missing out on experiences due to fatigue.

Finally, never forget to double-check your airport code. Cities often have more than one airport, and you might mistakenly assume you are departing from the one closest to the city center when you are actually booked elsewhere.

🎈 Conclusion.

Planning the perfect trip and designing a detailed day-by-day itinerary doesn’t have to be stressful.

It’s all about organising your ideas, using the right tools, and staying flexible. With a bit of research and smart choices, you can save time, money, and still enjoy every moment of your adventure.

So grab your notebook, open Google Maps, and start designing your dream journey one step at a time.
