📜 Introduction.

The Butchart Gardens is an enchanted Canadian park located in Brentwood Bay, on Vancouver Island. It’s a wonderful hidden gem just a stone’s throw from Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, and you can easily reach it from Vancouver by ferry. This green oasis was undoubtedly one of the most fascinating discoveries of my 4 months in Canada while doing my post-grad placement a Vancouver.

So, if you are planning an escape from the chaos and want to immerse yourself in nature, this park is the ideal place for a relaxing morning.

🌸 The History.

If you think this place is just another botanical garden, wait until you hear the Butchart Gardens incredible history! It all started back in 1904 when Jennie Butchart and her husband set up a cement factory and a limestone quarry right here on Vancouver Island.

When the limestone ran out and left behind a massive, desolate pit, Jennie had a brilliant idea. She decided to turn that barren crater into a lush floral oasis. She literally brought in loads of topsoil by horse and cart and even dangled from a bosun’s chair just to plant ivy on the stark quarry walls! Over the decades, she and her family transformed the exhausted land into the spectacular Sunken Garden, later expanding the estate with other gardens. They eventually gifted the magnificent grounds to their grandson for his 21st birthday.

Today, the same family still runs this stunning National Historic Site of Canada, proving that a little bit of imagination can quite literally make the earth bloom.

🌿 A Journey Through the Gardens of the World.

Walking through the Butchart Gardens feels like travelling the globe in a single morning. The park is actually split into five themed areas. Each one has a completely different soul and vibe:

• Sunken Garden. This is the historical beating heart of the estate. It is an old limestone quarry transformed into a fairy-tale landscape, full of vibrant colours and ancient trees.
• Rose Garden. The ultimate spot for romantic souls. Strolling here means getting lost under arches covered in climbing roses and breathing in some truly indescribable scents.
• Japanese Garden. A zen corner of pure serenity. If you are looking for a moment of peace, this is the place. Between silent streams, red maples, mosses, and wooden bridges, you will feel like you just landed in Kyoto.
• Italian Garden. Elegance reigns supreme here. This space celebrates the symmetry of classic Italian gardens. You will find geometric flowerbeds, ancient statues, and a beautiful star-shaped pond.
• Mediterranean Garden. This area hosts exotic plants and drought-resistant species. It gives off a warm summer vibe, which is a surprising contrast to the typical Canadian weather. surprising contrast to the typical Canadian weather.

🍨 Feeling Hungry?

The park offers a variety of delicious options to suit all tastes.

• The Dining Room Restaurant. It is a historic and elegant setting, and the ideal retreat to enjoy a traditional English Afternoon Tea. It is open daily from 111.30 AM to 3.00 PM but please note that admission to The Butchart Gardens is required to access it.
• The Blue Poppy Restaurant. If you are looking for a more casual and bright atmosphere, this is fantastic for a relaxed meal surrounded by natural light. It’s currently closed for the season, but will reopen for lunch in the spring. Admission to the gardens is required.
• Coffee Shop. Are you in a hurry because you don’t want to miss a single secret corner of the park? No problem! There is a convenient Coffee Shop for a quick coffee and snack. It is open daily during operating hours, and a takeaway service is available.
• Gelateria. If you happen to be in the area during the warmer months, pop into the Gelateria for a refreshing treat. It is closed for the winter season but reopens in the spring.

The Butchart Gardens are open all year round and offer different magic every month. Opening hours vary depending on the season: the gates always open at 9 AM, but closing times change. In winter, they close around 3.30 PM, while in summer they stay open until late evening for the beautiful night-time illuminations and fireworks.

They also organise seasonal and holiday events such as Christmas Carols, Ice Skating, or a Children’s Easter Bunny Hunt.

💡 Travel Tips.

The best time to visit this marvel is undoubtedly early morning, around 9 AM, right after the gates open. Later in the day, the park tends to fill up with tourists, while at the start of the day, you will have the paths almost entirely to yourself in absolute silence.

To get there, you can take a convenient bus directly from Victoria city centre or hire a car to enjoy the coastal scenery along the way. It is just half an hour away from the city, but you will feel like you have stepped into another world!
