Sardinia is so much more than just beaches, and Sa Stiddiosa, a hidden inland waterfall, is a heavenly oasis tucked away in the wild.
This beautiful oasis in the heart of Sardinia features a massive rock wall draped in moss. Water constantly drips into an emerald-green natural pool where you can actually bathe after your trek. Reaching this wonderful waterfall is not entirely effortless, but it certainly doesn’t require you to be an extreme hiker. I am by no means a professional mountaineer, and my well-known health conditions (Type 1 Diabetes, Graves’ disease, and asthma) don’t usually allow for strenuous effort. But I did it anyway, and honestly, it was easier than I expected! And it is absolutely worth the effort.
So, in this post, I share my experience and give you all the details you need to organise a perfect day trip to Sa Stiddiosa, Sardinia’s hidden waterfall.

🗺️ A Bit of Geography: Understanding the territory around Sa Stiddiosa.
Hidden deep in the wild Barbagia region, Sa Stiddiosa sits between the towns of Seulo and Gadoni. The name comes from the Sardinian word “stiddiu”, which simply means “drop”. The water does not crash down loudly here. Instead, it gently drips, creating a hypnotic visual effect.
The River Flumineddu flows quietly at the bottom of this immense green wall. The silence is unreal and you can only hear the water and the wind in the trees. It is a true slice of paradise, far away from the crowded beaches.
🌞 Sa Stiddiosa Step by Step.
The adventure to Sa Stiddiosa usually begins in the town of Seulo. From there, you will need to drive for about 6 to 7 km, the last two of which are along a gravel track. Once you arrive, you can easily park your car and purchase your ticket right on the spot.
You should expect the journey to take about 4 hours, which leaves plenty of time for a relaxing lunch break. Be mindful of the terrain: the route features long, uneven stretches that can be quite steep and slippery on both the descent and the climb back up, though these are thankfully interspersed with almost completely flat sections where you can catch your breath.
The Descent.
The path down is roughly 2.2 km long and can be split into two main stages. The first leg, which is relatively easy, starts at Perda Pertunta near the car park and stretches for 1.1 km. You then arrive at Perda Longa, where the most difficult section begins. This steeper part lasts for another kilometre, leading you directly down to Sa Stiddiosa.
I must admit, the overall descent is not particularly easy. However, you walk entirely through a beautiful forest of holm oaks and strawberry trees. It took me about two hours in total, as I stopped frequently to take photos, admire the views, and catch my breath.
Reaching the Waterfall.
When you finally reach the bottom, the scenery simply takes your breath away. You immediately spot the large natural pool framed by rocks covered in maidenhair ferns. The water of La Gocciolante is incredibly crisp and clear. Swimming here feels wonderfully refreshing!
The Walk Back Up.
Right, here comes the tough bit! What you walked down, you now have to walk back up. I found the ascent much more exhausting, partly because of the intense July heat, and also because the first part of the trail is quite narrow, exposed, and steep. The elevation gain is certainly noticeable. However, the path is well-marked. Just take your time, have as many breaks as you need, and you will reach the top without any issues.
🚗 How to Get to Sa Stiddiosa.
I’m not going to lie to you. Public transport in Sardinia isn’t great, especially when you venture into the hinterland and countryside. Reaching remote, wild places like Sa Stiddiosa even from main cities such as Cagliari or Nuoro is not the easiest task. There are some trains, coaches, and buses getting at Seulo town, but they aren’t very frequent, rarely offer direct routes, and stick to incredibly rigid timetables with plenty of changes.
So, the best way to explore this beautiful island is by car. However, the roads and motorways aren’t always in the best condition either. If you decide to drive to Sa Stiddiosa from Cagliari, please be careful. You have two alternatives: E25/SS131 (Carlo Felice) faster and fluid, and SS128 (Centrale Sarda), internal road that crosses towns and villages, but full of curves!

🎫 Tickets and Practical Info.
During the summer months, local authorities regulate access to Sa Stiddiosa in order to protect the pristine environment. An entry ticket costs around €7 for adults and €5 for kids to be paid in cash.
🛏️ Where to Stay in Sa Stiddiosa.
You will not find big hotel chains around here. Instead, you can discover lovely, authentic spots.
- S’Antiga Inn. This beautiful guest house is lodged inside an old Sardinian property dating back to 1850. It is beautifully decorated and situated right in the centre of Seulo, close to restaurants, a supermarket, and the bus stop. They state that they also organise excursions and day trips, which is absolutely perfect if you are travelling alone without a car. It costs roughly €70 per night, though please note that breakfast is not served.
- Lugori. This is your best bet if you want to stay as close to Sa Stiddiosa as possible. This lovely B&B is just a 25-minute walk from the Sa Stiddiosa ticket office. It has breakfast included and costs about €60 per night.
- Hotel Miramonti Seulo Turismo Rurale. This gorgeous hotel located in Seulo features a swimming pool with mountain views, an on-site restaurant, and includes breakfast. It is a bit on the pricey side at around €150 per night, but it is a brilliant option if you want a touch of luxury after your hike!

💡 Travel Tips.
To make the most of your adventure, the best months to tackle this trek are April, May, and October. The weather is pleasantly warm without the extreme summer heat, though the water will be quite brisk if you fancy a dip! If you visit Sa Stiddiosa during the hottest months, make sure to start very early to avoid the midday sun during your gruelling ascent.
Please bear in mind that this 4 to 5-kilometre route is officially classified as EE (Experienced Hikers) due to its 350-metre elevation gain, uneven terrain filled with slippery leaves and loose stones, and steep sections equipped with ropes to assist your climb. Consequently, it is genuinely not recommended if you have underlying health issues.
Since there are absolutely no facilities or drinking water springs on the trail, it is crucial to wear proper trekking boots with excellent grip and pack a sturdy rucksack containing at least two litres of water per person, plenty of food, sun cream, insect repellent, a towel or mat, and water shoes for safely navigating the rocky riverbed. Do not forget your swimsuit, of course!
Finally, remember that there is zero mobile phone reception down in the gorge, dogs are welcome but restricted to a specific designated area just downstream from the waterfall, and it is entirely up to us to respect this pristine site by taking absolutely all of our rubbish home with us.
