Sure, taking taxis isn’t strictly in line with budget travel, but for us solo female travellers, these apps are an absolute godsend. They are especially crucial for safely reaching your hotel after a long flight or getting back to your accommodation at night with a tracked ride.

In this article, I share a comprehensive list of the best taxi apps around the world, so you know exactly which ones to download before setting off on your next adventure.

This app is incredibly popular in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Eurasia (Georgia and Azerbaijan), but you’ll also find it in London, Paris, Budapest and other major capitals. It often offers cheaper fares than Uber, alongside fantastic promotions if you are a new user.
• FreeNow. It operates in over 150 European cities, including some in Italy (Milan, Rome, Turin, Naples, Palermo, Catania, and Cagliari) and 50 airports and it’s very easy to use. • Cabify. Born in Spain, this app is a must-have if you’re travelling there or visiting certain Latin American countries. It’s renowned for its high-quality service and rigorous safety standards. • inDrive. A revolutionary app that is becoming increasingly indispensable across South America (especially in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru). Here, you propose the fare for the ride, and drivers can either accept it or make a counter-offer! It is brilliant for saving money, but always remember to check the driver’s reviews and ratings before accepting.

🍣 Asia.

The Asian taxi app market has exploded in recent years. From the bustling streets of Southeast Asia to Japan and India, having the right app will save you from endless linguistic headaches.

• Grab. The ultimate must-have app for Southeast Asia. Whether you are in Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, or Malaysia, Grab is a lifesaver. You can book scooter rides (though helmets aren’t always provided!), order food, and even get your groceries delivered. Moreover, you’ll also find discounts, special offers and the GrabCoins programme within the app, allowing you to earn points from your journeys and receive additional rewards.
• Gojek. Founded in Indonesia, this is Grab’s direct rival. If you are planning a trip to Bali or other Indonesian islands, Gojek is ideal. The moped drivers are used to weaving through the islands’ chaotic traffic with incredible skill.
• Didi. If your travels take you to China, Didi is the undisputed giant of the Chinese market. The brilliant thing is that it features an English interface and a built-in automatic translator within the chat. You can communicate smoothly with your driver without needing to speak a single word of Mandarin! Plus, it is rapidly expanding, connecting 550 million users worldwide.
• S.RIDE. Japan can be intimidating with its language barrier, but this app is the perfect solution if you find yourself in the Land of the Rising Sun. It allows you to contact an official local taxi with the utmost ease, letting you type in your destination in English.
• Ola. If your itinerary takes you into the glorious chaos of India, you simply cannot do without this app. It allows you to book not only safe, tracked cars but also the famous local tuk-tuks. A true lifesaver for us female travellers, as it spares you the stress of haggling and guarantees transparent, upfront fares.

🏤 Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Russia, and Eurasia.

The Eastern European and Eurasian markets play by their own rules. If you’re travelling in these regions, forget the big Western names and rely on local solutions, which are far more efficient and economical.

• Maxim. Widely used in Central Asia (like Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan) and parts of Southeast Asia, it has a slightly more basic interface but is incredibly useful for finding a ride in smaller towns. Reviews can be mixed, so always ensure the driver has good feedback before accepting the ride.
• Yandex Go. The quintessential app for Russia and many former Soviet republics. Besides offering super safe and tracked taxis, you can also use it to order food. It’s essential if you are planning a trip around Moscow, St. Petersburg, and neighbouring nations. Prices are remarkably low compared to Western Europe, and the service is flawless.
• Yellow and OK Supertrans. If you are travelling in Bulgaria, these two traditional taxi companies have their own official apps. They are the most reliable choices for avoiding dodgy cab drivers lurking outside the airport. As I lived for three years in Sofia, I can honestly say that Yellow was my favourite.

🦓 The Middle East and Africa.

Getting around in these regions can feel like a real challenge, especially since public transport doesn’t always reach everywhere, and haggling for a taxi on the street can be exhausting. Fortunately, these local apps are true lifelines for travelling in total safety and comfort.

• Heetch. If you are planning a trip to Morocco, you should download this taxi app, as it is undeniably the most reliable here. It is also used in France and Belgium. Moreover, you can also pay your driver directly in cash.
• Yango. Managed by the same parent company as Yandex, this is the primary option for getting around in several countries across Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The fares are unbeatable, and the coverage is excellent.
• Careem. Acquired by Uber, this is the definitive app if you’re travelling in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, or Morocco. Aside from providing immaculate cars and professional drivers, it boasts incredibly high safety standards. And if you’re feeling peckish after a long day of exploring, you can even use it to order dinner straight to your hotel!
• Otaxi. If your itinerary leads you to discover the magical landscapes of Oman, Otaxi is the number one app. The classic global apps simply don’t work the same way here, but Otaxi fills the gap brilliantly. The best thing is the option to select the “O-Female” service to request a female driver: a fantastic idea to ensure you always feel 100% comfortable. Just be careful not to confuse it with the Finnish taxi service of the same name (Otaxi.fi).
• Karwa Taxi. If you’re planning a trip to luxurious Qatar, this is the official state-run app (managed by Mowasalat). The iconic turquoise cars are spotless, perfectly air-conditioned, and the fares are rigorously controlled by the app’s taximeter.

🦘 Australia and New Zealand.

If your journey is taking you literally to the other side of the world, download these apps to get around stress-free between modern cities and breathtaking landscapes. The global apps do work here, but the local options offer guaranteed safety and often better prices.

• 13cabs. In Australia, this is the taxi app par excellence. Unlike classic ride-sharing, 13cabs connects you directly with the official Australian taxi fleet. There is no dynamic pricing (the dreaded surge pricing!), so you won’t end up paying silly money if you need a lift on a Saturday night or during a sudden downpour.
