A site that’s perfect for finding budget hostels in Southeast Asia may not be the best place to book a luxury resort in Europe, and vice versa. Knowing which platform suits your destination and travel style can save you time, money, and a lot of stress, while making sure you find the place that truly fits your trip.

In this post, I’ll share my favourite travel websites for booking the perfect accommodation around the world, with exclusive discounts and promo offers. I’ve been using Booking.com for more than 12 years, ever since I’ve started travelling, because at the time, it was the most popular platform. Nevertheless, over time, I’ve noticed a slight decline in their service. Prices tend to be higher compared to other platforms, promotions are less frequent, discount notifications often arrive just a few days before they expire, the refer a friend programme no longer exists, and after reaching Genius Level 3 there aren’t many truly valuable perks left.

Sometimes, you can find a small discount on the same hotel or hostel if you book through the app on your phone. These are called mobile-only offers, and these accommodations are marked with a special badge so users can easily spot them in the search results.

However, Booking still remains a reliable choice for many travellers. The platform offers an extensive selection of hotels, hostels, and accommodations worldwide, with an easy-to-use interface that makes searching, booking, and managing reservations very straightforward.

📍 Agoda

Agoda is a leading booking platform, especially popular for resorts, hotels and travel packages across Asia. Moreover, it’s also part of the Trip.com Group.

Personally, I found some great deals for various resorts in Thailand that convinced me to make an exception. After months of low-budget travel, I experienced the thrill of staying at the wonderful Hub Erawan Resort.

Vio is a hotel meta-search engine similar to Skyscanner for flights that scans hundreds of booking platforms simultaneously to find you the best available price for your chosen property. Rather than booking directly with one provider, Vio compares rates across Booking.com, Hotels.com, Agoda, and dozens of others in a single search, so you can be confident you are getting the lowest price without having to check each site individually.

It is particularly useful when you already know which hotel you want to stay at and simply want to find the cheapest platform to book it through. Lightweight, fast, and completely free to use, Vio is a handy addition to your booking toolkit especially for travellers who like to compare before committing.

Rakuten Travel is Japan’s leading booking platform and an essential tool for anyone planning a trip to the Land of the Rising Sun. Part of the Rakuten Group, one of Japan’s largest e-commerce companies, it offers an extensive selection of ryokan (traditional Japanese inns), business hotels, resort hotels, and city properties that you will rarely find listed on Western platforms.

What sets Rakuten Travel apart is its depth of coverage for domestic Japanese properties, including smaller, family-run guesthouses in rural areas and off-the-beaten-track destinations. If you are planning to explore beyond Tokyo and Kyoto, Rakuten Travel is often the only platform where you will find availability. Moreover, you can even rent cars and book experiences to do in Japan.

🤔 Which one you should choose?

With so many platforms available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. My personal strategy consists of cross-checking Booking.com with another one that is country or type specific. For instance, Agoda for Asia or Trip.com for China, or Hostelworld to compare hostel prices. When I’ve chosen my preferred accommodation, I then check on Vio whether there are platforms offering cheapest offers. And then I simply book.
