Of course, the beaches are still an absolute must-visit. They are probably some of the best in the entire world, but that is not everything! Every season brings incredible cultural events and brilliant outdoor activities all year round. And let us not forget the delicious Sardinian cuisine and those mouth-watering traditional dishes.

So, to help you plan your perfect trip, I have put together this ultimate list. I have selected the top 35 things to see and do in Sardinia. I’ve mixed up gorgeous beaches, rugged mountains, cultural events, and must-see cities and towns.

Sardinia boasts some of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. You will find every type of beach imaginable here: fine white sand or golden desert dunes. You will discover gorgeous pebbled shores, dramatic rocky cliffs, and totally wild, hidden coves. If you want pure luxury, you can easily relax at a glamorous beach resort. But if you are just looking to unwind, you will find endless miles of beautiful, free beaches. There is even a famous pink sand beach at Budelli, but you cannot actually walk on the sand to protect the delicate ecosystem.

1. Baunei.

If you are feeling brave, you can go on a long, beautiful trek from Cala Gonone to experience some of the most impressive coastlines in Sardinia. Alternatively, you can take a relaxing boat trip along the Baunei Coast. This is the absolute best way to marvel at hidden coves like Cala Goloritzé and Cala Mariolu.

2. La Maddalena Archipelago.

Rent a little dinghy for the day and discover unspoilt beaches scattered across these gorgeous islands of La Maddalena. It is pure magic and an absolute must-do for your Sardinian itinerary.

3. Piscinas Dunes.

Head over to the wild west coast to find this stunning spot. You will discover towering, golden sand dunes that look like a desert. It is actually one of the largest beaches in Sardinia, and it feels exactly like a desertic oasis.

4. Is Aruttas.

This beautiful beach is famous for its completely unique shore. The tiny, colourful quartz pebbles look like grains of rice! Please remember that you must never take the sand or pebbles away with you. The authorities strictly protect this incredible natural reserve, and they will hand out a massive fine if you break the rules.

5. Sant’Antioco and San Pietro Islands.

Drive down south to explore these two incredibly charming islands. Sant’Antioco is only about an hour and a half drive from Cagliari. You can explore the place where our patron saint, Sant’Antioco, converted and visit his ancient church and fascinating catacombs. To reach San Pietro, you just catch a quick ferry from either mainland Sardinia or Sant’Antioco itself. Both islands offer incredible seafood, colourful fishing villages and incredible beaches.

6. La Pelosa.

You will find this gem sitting right on the north-western tip of Sardinia in Stintino. It is without a doubt a world-famous, award-winning beach. With its striking shallow turquoise water and a little ancient tower dominating the sea, it will take your breath away. Just a quick heads-up: you absolutely need to book your entry ticket well in advance online during the high season!

🥾 Nature and Outdoor Adventures.

The Sardinian interior is wild, rugged, and completely mesmerising. But guess what? The adventure does not stop inland. You can also discover medium-high peaks and wonderful trekking paths right along the gorgeous shoreline, stretching all the way from the north down to the south.

7. Canyon Gorropu.

This is Italy’s biggest canyon and one of Europe’s deepest gorges. The massive limestone walls will completely blow your mind. You can choose different levels of difficulty for this trek by walking the entire way, or catching a jeep for an easier route.

8. Monte Limbara.

If you want to totally immerse yourself in nature, Monte Limbara is your ideal destination. You will find over 90 km of incredible hiking trails. I highly recommend the route starting from Vallicciola. You walk amongst stunning granite rocks, reach the little church of Madonna della Neve at over 1,000 metres up, and finally hit the Giogantinu summit at 1,330 metres. The views are unbelievable!

9. Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara.

This historical trail takes you through old mining villages and stunning coastal paths in the south-west. Experts rate it as one of the best walking routes in Italy. It stretches for 300 km across 30 different stages. This means you can easily pick your perfect path based on your fitness level and interests.

10. Parco della Giara.

Make sure you climb up to this incredible high plateau. You can spend the afternoon watching the famous, native wild horses running freely through ancient cork oak forests. It is such a peaceful and completely unique Sardinian experience.

11. Roccia dell’Orso.

You must visit Palau to see the famous “Bear Rock”. The coastal winds have naturally carved this massive granite formation into the perfect shape of a bear looking out over the sea. It makes for the absolute best view opportunity!

12. Sa Stiddiosa:

You need to find this stunning waterfall hidden right in the centre of the island. The name actually means “the dripping one”. Water drips beautifully down a rocky, plant-covered wall straight into a spectacular emerald pool. It is the absolute perfect spot for a refreshing wild swim after the trekking.

🏛️ Ancient History and Archeological Sites.

The absolute most famous archaeological structure on the island is the Nuraghe. Ancient people built these massive stone towers for daily life and defence. However, as you travel across the island, you will also find hundreds of Domus de Janas. Locals lovingly call these little rock-carved caves the “fairy houses”.Moreover, Sardinia hosts hundreds of Tombe dei Giganti (Giants’ Tombs), too. Ancient populations used these huge stone monuments for collective burials dating all the way back to 1800 BC. But wait, that is not everything! You can also explore incredible archaeological sites that look like Stonehenge, a real flat-topped ziqqurat, and mysterious sacred water wells.

13. Nuraghe, Tomba dei Giganti, or Domus de Janas

You absolutely must see these Bronze Age stone towers, giant tombs, and mystical fairy houses. I highly recommend visiting Su Nuraxi in Barumini. It offers the most complete Nuragic experience on the entire island. You will honestly feel like you have stepped completely back in time!

14. Pozzo di Santa Cristina.

This sacred water well looks impossibly modern. Ancient Sardinians built it with flawless precision over 3,000 years ago. Around midday during the summer solstice, the sun shines perfectly through a tiny hole. It illuminates the entire inside of the well.

15. Monte d’Accoddi.

Did you know Europe actually has a ziqqurat? You can find this incredible, flat-topped pyramid structure right near Sassari. This ziqqurat dates back to the Neolithic period and according to legend, it was built by a prince-priest who had fled from the Middle East.

16. Tharros

Tharros archaeological site houses ancient Phoenician and Roman ruins. They sit right on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea and combines fascinating history with breathtaking coastal views.

17. Porto Flavia.

Brilliant miners carved this spectacular port directly into a sheer cliff face. You walk through the dark tunnels and look out straight over the sea. The panoramic views of the Pan di Zucchero sea stack are completely unmatched.

🏞️ Sardinia’s Caves.

Sardinia and its surrounding islands are absolutely full of beautiful caves and hidden coves. You can easily reach many of these stunning sea caves by taking a relaxing boat trip. However, you can also visit others by tackling a long coastal trek or enjoying a super easy hike. I have explored some of them, and here are my favourites to add to your itinerary!

18. Grotta di Nettuno.

You absolutely have to visit this magical sea cave near Alghero. You can easily reach the entrance by taking a relaxing, scenic boat trip. Alternatively, you can walk down the famous 650 steps of the Escala del Cabirol. The locals carved this incredible staircase directly into the dramatic cliff face!

19. Cane Malu.

You will find this stunning natural pool right on the coast of Bosa.The sea has carved Cane Malu directly into pure white trachyte rock. It creates an incredible, surreal environment that looks exactly like a lunar landscape.

20. Grotta Sardegna.

This is probably the most stunning coastal marvel in the south-west. You can find this gorgeous blue cave near the massive Pan di Zucchero sea stack. When you sit on a boat and look out from the inside, the rocky cave opening is perfectly shaped exactly like the island of Sardinia.

21. Grotta di San Giovanni.

With its 860-metre-long internal road, it holds the record as the longest cave in the world accessible by vehicle! It is the only one of its kind in Italy and one of just seven globally. At certain times of the day, they even let you cycle right through the middle of the mountain.

🍷 Culture and Festivals.

You simply have to experience the true beating heart of the island! You will see everyone wearing stunning traditional costumes and hear our incredible local polyphonic singing, known as Canto a tenore. Plus, you get to eat absolute mountains of delicious, authentic local food. Trust me, diving into this vibrant Sardinian culture will make your holiday completely unforgettable.

22. Sant’Efisio Festival.

Make sure to visit Cagliari on the 1st of May for this one. Thousands of locals dress in brightly coloured, traditional costumes for a massive religious procession. They walk through the city streets to honour the patron saint. It is deeply moving and gives you a true taste of Sardinian devotion.

23. Sa Sartiglia.

You simply must head over to Oristano during the Carnival season. You will watch fearless, masked riders gallop at full speed on horseback. They try to pierce a hanging silver star with their swords as they ride past. It is an absolutely thrilling equestrian tradition that you should not miss.

24. Autunno in Barbagia.

If you plan your trip in autumn, you cannot miss this incredible event. Charming mountain villages open their historic courtyards to visitors every weekend. The locals share ancient, traditional crafts and serve the most incredible homemade Sardinian food. You will feel completely welcomed into their warm community.

25. Sa die de Sa Sardinia.

Celebrate our beautiful national holiday with us on the 28th of April! Locals everywhere commemorate a historic 1794 rebellion against the Piedmontese rulers. You will find amazing historical reenactments, traditional folk music, and joyful celebrations happening all across the island.

🏘️ Charming Towns and City Vibes.

From ancient cobbled streets to our stunning capital city, these spots make for the absolute perfect day out. You will love exploring these gorgeous towns by the sea or fascinating mountain villages completely covered in street art murals. You can even visit historic settlements carved directly into the rugged rock! Whether you want major cities with incredible architecture or charming, colourful fishing villages, Sardinia truly has it all.

26. Cagliari.

This is the stunning capital city of Sardinia (Capoluogo). You will love exploring its historic centre, which is divides into four ancient quarters. It boasts a beautiful port, a promenade, and fantastic shopping streets. Make sure to hit up Poetto beach for a morning swim, hike the iconic Sella del Diavolo (Devil’s Saddle) promontory and head over to the Molentargius salt pans to spot the pink flamingos!

27. Orgosolo Murals.

You absolutely must stroll through this famous mountain town in the Barbagia region. Hundreds of striking political and social murals completely cover the houses. These brilliant artworks tell the powerful, emotional story of the island.

28. Bosa.

Bosa is an absolute dream. You will find a rainbow of pastel-coloured houses perfectly lining a beautiful river and a beatuful castle up on a hill. Also, remember when I mentioned the Cane Malu natural pool earlier? You will find that stunning white rock formation right here on the Bosa coast.

29. Alghero

Make sure you explore this stunning walled coastal city in the north-west. It actually has an incredibly strong Catalan influence, which makes the architecture totally unique. Walk along the ancient ramparts and watch the beautiful, golden sunsets right over the sea.

30. Tempio Pausania.

Head up north to discover this incredibly mountain town. Masons constructed the entire historic centre from solid, grey granite blocks. You will find the town beautifully surrounded by cool, green cork oak forests. It offers the perfect, refreshing escape on a hot summer day.

31. Castelsardo.

This incredibly picturesque medieval town sits proudly on a steep hill overlooking the sea. An ancient, well-preserved castle tops the entire village. You will love wandering through the narrow, winding streets and shopping for traditional Sardinian handicrafts.

32. Sadali.

Experts officially recognise this incredible spot as one of the most beautiful borghi in all of Italy! Locals lovingly call this medieval gem the “village of water and fairies”. You will actually find the gorgeous San Valentino waterfall cascading right in the middle of the historic centre. Moreover, you can also explore the fascinating ancient water mills and the magical Is Janas caves nearby.

I honestly think spring is the absolute best season to visit Sardinia. You get to enjoy much milder weather and completely avoid the heavy summer crowds. Plus, the entire island literally bursts into beautiful, colourful blooms! If you are planning a spring holiday, you definitely need to add these delightful stops to your Sardinian itinerary.

33. Flower Fields.

I highly recommend welcoming spring at Beranu Froriu in Turri or the beautiful Giardino di Lu in Pimentel. You can spend hours walking through thousands of blooming, brightly coloured tulips. Remember that based on the season, you will find different types of flowers and events. If you visit Beranu Froriu in autumn, expect to visit the fantastic pumpkin garden here.

34. Nora Aquarium.

Plan a lovely afternoon down south in Pula. You can learn all about adorable sea turtles and discover the brilliant local marine life rescue efforts. I love combining this fun aquarium visit with a trip to the nearby Nora archaeological ruins for a complete, unforgettable day out.

35. Giardino delle Farfalle.

You absolutely have to visit the beautiful Butterfly House in Olmedo. You can wander slowly through warm, tropical gardens while hundreds of stunning butterflies flutter freely all around you.

💡 Travel Tips.

When to visit Sardinia.

I always say the absolute best time of the year to visit Sardinia is April and May, but also late September, or early October. You will find cheaper prices and enjoy far fewer crowds! However, you might just want a pure beach holiday. If so, the hottest summer months of July and August are completely perfect for you.

Respect and General Rules.

Whenever you plan your Sardinian trip, please remember one huge rule. You must never take sand, pebbles, rocks, or minerals from the shore. The local authorities will give you a massive fine! Plus, leaving the beaches exactly as you found them shows vital respect for our beautiful environment. Also, you should know that local councils have now banned smoking on most of our beaches to protect the sand.

Getting Around in Sardinia.

When it comes to getting around, public transport outside the city of Cagliari is honestly quite limited. The absolute best way to explore Sardinia is by renting a car. Driving gives you the freedom to find all those incredible hidden gems!

Accommodation in Sardinia.

You should also know that cheap accommodation is quite rare across the island. We do not really have a big hostel or backpacking culture here, and you will not find many budget hotels. Instead, I highly recommend staying in a cosy guest house, a lovely bed and breakfast, or a traditional agriturismo (farm stay). They offer such an authentic, warm experience!

You generally do not need to book entrance tickets for museums and archaeological sites in advance. However, you absolutely must book your entry for those famous, protected beaches well ahead of time during the high season!
